Philosophy St Charles is a Catholic school that serves the spiritual and educational needs of the children on the San Carlos Apache Reservation. Aware that we are serving a people whose native culture and talents have been suppressed for decades, we are dedicated to helping our students be all they can be: as Apaches, as Christians, and as Americans. Our firm commitment to the precepts and teaching of Christ guides us in our educational goals and objectives, in our evangelization, and in our service to the student and people of this beautiful land. We see our role as truly influential in the lives of the students. We believe that in serving their educational needs, we are promoting the good not only of the child, but of the family and community. We believe that our school carries out Christ's instruction to:" go forth and teach all nations". (Mathew 28:19) We honor the parents' role as first educators and share in their commitment to Christian living within the Apache tradition. Curriculum The staff follow the curriculum of the Diocese of Tucson and State Standards. Basic subjects include: Religion, Math Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, Computer instruction, Physical Education, Music and Apache Language and Culture. Apache language is taught. Apache culture and tradition is integrated into the subject areas. We encourage parents and grandparents to teach the language at home. The basic reason for our existence as a school is the religious formation of our students. The school community begins the day with prayer in English and Apache, the Pledge of Allegiance and patriotic songs. Students attend mass at least twice a month, and there are special prayer services during Advent and Lent. Students in grade 5 and 6 have their own bible and use them frequently. Traditional Catholic devotions such as Rosary and the Stations of the Cross are taught. Guidance sessions are conducted throughout the year to promote healthy self-esteem and responsible decision-making skills and to prevent drug alcohol abuse. The school has a working partnership with San Carlos Wellness Center, Tribal Health and Dental Departments and the newly formed Tribal Truancy Program.
